Kingston CommUnity

This isn't a blog about politics, it isn't about campaigning either. This blog is about what I have seen from friends, neighbors and people I've only just met, during the aftermath of Hurricane Irene.

I have been witness to selflessness, generosity, kindness, camaraderie and shared sorrow.
I have heard conversations that begin with "do you need anything?"
I have related stories of loss and destruction and been given the response of "what can we do to help?"

These past few days the people of this city both young and old have given my heart a much needed boost. So many have stepped up to help one another even when they themselves are in need. Whether it was donations, lending a hand to help clean up, having a sympathetic ear or giving a much needed hug YOU were there.

I can not begin to express the pride that I have in this city, the love that I have developed for it's giving nature or the gratitude that I feel for everyone who has helped another.

For two days we sat and listened to the wail of sirens throughout our neighborhoods and we hoped and prayed that everyone was alright. We heard about a devastating fire that claimed the life of a precious child and together shared our grief and answered the call to assist the family.
I've seen friends and strangers alike working side by side. I've read FB posts from people directing others to places in need of help and then seen the replies of on my way and what do they need.

These past few days have shown me what this city is truly made of. How strong the people, it's backbone, can be. These days following the hurricane have also confirmed for my family that this is where we were meant to be. This is where our children should learn from the kindness of others and grow up with the knowledge that they live in a comm Unity that cares for one another.

My thanks really aren't enough, you have given me a brighter outlook and a renewed vigor. You have all made me and my family proud to call Kingston our home!
